Red River Waterway Commission awards Sci-Port $51,225 for Title I 4th graders in seven parishes to visit Center

Funds will make new traveling exhibit available to parishes which Red River runs through

Shreveport, La. – The Red River Waterway Commission and Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center were present at seven recent school board meetings to announce the commission’s sponsorship for RiverWorks Discovery, the latest traveling exhibition at Sci-Port. The funds will allow for all 4th graders of Title I schools (teachers and chaperones included) in Caddo; Avoyelles; Bossier; Natchitoches; Rapides; Red River and Grant parishes to visit the Center for free.

Additionally, 4th graders of Title I schools in the seven parishes will experience the Center's latest Traveling Exhibition RiverWorks Discovery and take part in “What’s My Watershed?," a program led by Sci-Port staff.

“Sci-Port is thrilled to find a project that the Red River Waterway Commission can support which benefits each of their parishes,” said Sci-Port President/CEO Ann Fumarolo. “These funds will allow more Louisiana students to experience Sci-Port and a unique exhibit on a topic we can all relate to – the Red River.”

"On behalf of the Red River Waterway Commission, we are proud to be a part of the RiverWorks Discovery experience," said Executive Director of the Commission Ken Guidry.

Transportation costs for schools in the outlying parishes will be covered by Sci-Port as well.

RiverWorks Discovery, a journey of imagination and exploration of America’s waterways, is a hands-on, educational traveling exhibition designed to teach the importance of commerce, culture and conservation on America’s inland waterways. The exhibit accomplishes this mission by weaving the rich, complex, multidisciplinary story through the use of immersive environments, hands-on interactive exhibits, educational panels and engaging films and artifacts.

The Red River Waterway Commission works to provide recreational opportunities and foster commercial development along the Red River. The Commission is governed by an eleven-member board that includes a representative from Caddo, Bossier, Red River, Natchitoches, Grant, Rapides and Avoyelles Parishes and four at-large representatives. Additional information about the Red River Waterway is available at redriverwaterway.com.

Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center is a 92,000 square-foot science and entertainment center featuring 290 hands-on exhibits, 70 interactive programs and demonstrations, a Space Center and Space Dome Planetarium, IMAX Dome Theatre, gift shop and café. Sci-Port is a member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers; a LA Space Consortium member and is recognized by Parents magazine as one of the nation’s ten best science centers. The Center is located at 820 Clyde Fant Parkway on the downtown Shreveport Riverfront.
