Red River Waterway Commission approves development of additional disc golf course

Red River Waterway Commission approves development of additional disc golf course

Natchitoches, Louisiana The Red River Waterway Commission recently announced approval for the development of an additional disc golf course at the Fort Buhlow Recreation Area near Pineville in Rapides Parish. The 18-hole course will be located adjacent to the existing course at Fort Buhlow which was completed by the Commission in 2012. It is expected the course will be completed in the fall of 2013.

Disc golf is similar to regular golf but involves the use of golf discs similar to Frisbess where players aim for a chain basket that extends up from the ground where the disc lands. This type of sport is very popular and there is a growing interest in central Louisiana. Last November, the first annual Red River Rendevouz was held at Fort Buhlow and attracted people from all over the state. The tournament, which is sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golfer Association, is also a Southern Nationals Disc Golf Championship qualifier. Red River Rendevouz coordinators were pleased with the outcome and plan to host future tournaments, such as the state tournament in December 2013 at this golf course. Red River Waterway officials believe this additional course will entice other disc golf enthusiasts and event coordinators to visit our area.

The Red River Waterway Commission has funded many other projects that enhance recreational opportunities along the Red River. This development includes 19 boat launching facilities along the Red River from north of Shreveport to Marksville, Louisiana.
